Reader’s Question:
What does NRVC mean? I heard from my mom that having traffic violation in another state does not mean I could get away with it because of NRVC. And it’s house rule # 1 not to be involved in any traffic violations whether here in Koolaupoko, Hawaii or in any other states since that would mean higher car insurance rate for my mom. I forgot to mention, I am a teen driver and I am under her auto insurance policy. Can anyone help me with my question?

The Non-Resident Violator Compact (NRVC) is a compact among 45 states in the US. Its main goal is to process traffic violations across the states. This is how the NRVC works. Let’s say you visited your friend in Texas. While driving in Texas you were cited for over speeding. Then, you chose not to pay the fine. Texas will notify your home state regarding your violation and your home state Hawaii will suspend your license until you pays the fine.
Hawaii is a member of NRVC since January 1996. There are only five states that are not members of this compact - Wisconsin, California, Michigan, Alaska, and Montana.
When your mom set the house rule # 1 which is not to be involved in any traffic violations, she’s doing what’s best. Because it’s true that being cited for traffic violations could mean higher car insurance premiums. So be careful whenever you drive around Koolaupoko, Hawaii or anywhere else.
