Im moving to Arizona next month and I would like to know if Im required to get auto insurance in Arizona?

Bill

Glendale, AZ

Most states requires you to have auto liability insurance. All states also have financial responsibility laws. Even if the state does not require auto insurance, you are required to have sufficient assets to pay auto insurance claims if you cause an accident otherwise you need to buy the required minimum liability insurance of the state.

Auto insurance in Arizona has the required coverages of Bodily Injury and Property Damage. The minimum required limits are $15,000 per person and $30,000 per accident for Bodily Injury and $10,000 per accident for Property Damage.

Reader’s Question:

I don’t want me to take all day just to get the car insurance coverage that I want. Could you tell me how can I get cheap car insurance coverage here in the state of Arizona?

Edith

Scottsdale, AZ

Looking for car insurance is one thing that each motorist in Arizona will be paying attention to. But, this would not be a very easy chore because anyone would like to have a low cost car insurance coverage. To lower your car insurance charges, you can first get rid of coverage that you don’t need. A lot of car insurance policies have more coverage than the least amount required. Comprehensive, collision, uninsured motorist as well as personal injury protection are examples of coverage that are in your policy that could increase your premiums. Then you may also increase your deductible so that you could be able to save some money. A little warning that you have to make sure that you can pay the deductible that you choose in the event of filing a claim.

Doing your own research is also one way of making sure that you will have low cost car insurance coverage. In the state of Arizona, there is a ‘Rate Increase Law’ wherein it won’t allow the car insurance provider to increase your premiums if you have an accident in which you are not at-fault. Another one is with regard to Cancellation of Car Insurance Policy in which the law doesn’t allow the termination of your car insurance policy by your insurer after once it has been in effect for 60 days with the exception of some instances.

Reader’s Question:

I’m in school right now and am considering purchasing a car. Is there a way for me to get cheap free car insurance somewhere here in Arizona?

Jacky

Phoenix, Arizona

It is very alluring, the idea of free car insurance, but, Jacky, there is no such thing as free car insurance anywhere in the United States. Each state, in fact, including Arizona, requires each driver to purchase a minimum form of insurance plan, most often liability insurance, in case you as a driver get into an auto accident. You know, for damages, lawsuits and such.

Auto manufacturers may be toying with the idea of a free car insurance, but they face mountains of challenges in coming up with coverage plans especially for the different types of drivers who buy their cars. So, what auto manufacturers do is that they offer incentives to their customers for gas allowance, discounts upon auto purchase, and other freebies to sweeten the deal. It is an attractive idea especially if the cost of car insurance, as well as other types of insurance policies, comes into the picture, but for now, it is not yet practical.

What you can do, though, would be to lower the cost of the car insurance that you pay for. There are different ways to do that. Shop around, get free car insurance quotes from companies. Compare policies of each company, and get tips on how you can lower your cost for car insurance.

Reader’s Question:

Will adding another driver in my auto insurance policy increase my current premium? I got my auto insurance here in Arizona.

Clarisse

Phoenix, AZ

Yes, adding another driver into your auto insurance policy definitely leads to additional costs to your current premium. Every person covered by your auto insurance policy presents risks while operating your vehicle. These risks are what the insurance policy is trying to protect you from.

As a rule, an auto insurance company will look into the motor vehicle record of each person covered by your policy. Each one will be evaluated according to the insurance company’s rating standards. The one that has the poorest driving record will be considered as the one presenting the highest risk. This rating will then be translated into dollar amounts and will determine the additional cost entailed by the additional coverage. Therefore, if you plan to add another driver in your auto insurance policy, you should identify what kind of risk your additional driver will present to know if you will have big or minimal additions.

Each auto insurance company in Arizona has its own set of guidelines for rating a driver. Therefore it is they who really decide on how to go about with the coverage of each member or driver of your household. But regardless of the cost implication, you should tell the auto insurance company about any additional members of your household and describe to the company who frequently uses your vehicle. The auto insurance agent should discuss with you if the members would be regarded as occasional driver or as the primary driver of your vehicle.

Reader’s Question:

I recently spoke to an auto insurance broker here in Arizona who told me that I am required to buy at least $25,000 worth of liability on a car insurance coverage, is that for real?

Tom

Phoenix, AZ

In essence, yes, you will need to buy a certain level of coverage from your auto insurance broker there in Arizona (or from anyone who is allowed to sell car insurance in your state, for that matter). Your car insurance broker was probably referring to the minimum levels of liability insurance that you need to get, as stated by the financial responsibility laws of your state.

To be more accurate, you need to get a coverage that has 15/30/10 on liability insurance. This means that your policy should be able to pay someone $15,000 at the least if you happen to cause bodily injuries in a car accident, $30,000 worth of coverage for all people that got hurt in the car accident and $10,000 that will be used to pay for loss or damages that is caused to property.

Again, these are the least amounts of liability auto insurance that you can get but it is highly recommended that you buy more. You can easily be sued for higher amounts than what the state minimum requirements are so if you can buy more, buy as much as you can afford. Also, don’t forget to shop around, just because you are dealing with a human doesn’t mean you are getting the best rates. There are many auto insurance portals like this web site that provides accurate insurance quotes, can even help you find discount auto insurance offers as well as compare rates from many different carriers.
