Reader’s Question:

Before signing up for a car insurance policy here in Michigan, what are the things that I can ask the car insurance company that might better help me get a lower rate?

Reiniel

Grand Rapids, MI

It would be very critical that you understand the different facets of car insurance claims prior to signing up with a policy. You should ask a lot of questions from the car insurance company, such as: who would cover the damages in the event that your vehicle gets into an accident? You may also ask them if your vehicle will be covered if you are the one who caused the accident and the amount that they would pay to repair your vehicle. Also, you can inquire what will happen if there would be extra damages found during the repairs. These are just few questions that you have to ask the car insurance company in Michigan before signing up with them.

One other crucial thing that you have to know is how long will it take for the auto insurance company to answer back in case you file a claim. If you’re renting a car that is covered by your car insurance policy and you wait for two to three days for them to review your claim, it may not be worth it. As an insured individual, you also have to be aware on how to file a claim and when you have to file it. For instance, if the price to repair for your car is less than your deductible, it may not be a good idea to file a claim. You have to know that whenever you file a claim, it would be noted on your insurance report. If you have a lot of claims, they will surely make your premiums go higher.

Reader’s Question:

How come there are different auto insurance premium rates for the same coverage in Michigan?

Alex

Detroit MI

Well Alex, the rate of your auto insurance premium is based on a lot of factors. Before I continue in what some of these factors, let me clarify first that they are not randomly selected. The insurance companies used data from previous studies done in order to get a better picture of you as a driver.

Gender is one of the main factors in determining how much insurance you will pay. You probably know that a lot of men make fun of women drivers. From the how slow they drive to how badly they park. Do you know why this rarely bothers women? Because they have the last laugh when it comes to insurance. Women drivers get to pay lower rates than their male counterparts. The reason is not simply because they are women. Studies have shown that women tend to be involved in fewer accidents. They are also not the type to file small or fraudulent claims unlike some men. As a result, insurance companies reward them with lower premiums.

Auto insurance premium in Michigan is also affected by age. The younger you are, the more you have to pay. This boils down to driving experiencing. A first time driver for example is likely to pay higher insurance than someone who has been driving for 30 years.

Credit history is another consideration. How good you pay your bills or balances will greatly affect how much you will pay. If you have a poor credit score, then insurance company knows that it may have trouble getting you to pay in the near future. To lessen the risk, you will be required to pay higher in order to offset the possibility of you not paying.

There are still other factors that I will not discuss since I may lack the necessary space. These include, among others, the type of car, where you live, etc. These are mainly the reasons why the rates for auto insurance premium differ.
