Reader’s Question:

I’m buying my first car here in Texas. Do I really have to buy car insurance, too? I am a first time driver as well.

Russell

Houston, TX

Having a car insurance policy is the law in every state in America. However, certain minimum liability requirements differ from state to state. Another fact is that car insurance rates are often more expensive for first-time drivers or teen drivers. This is primarily due to the high risk factor associated with inexperienced drivers which means that they cost more to insure.

Having a car insurance policy will not only give you some peace of mind, but it can also help you should you get into financial turmoil due to a car accident. If you get injured or if somebody else gets injured as a result of the accident, your bodily injury liability may cover certain medical expenses. If your car gets damaged in a collision with another car, then collision coverage would pay for repairs or even replacement of your car, while comprehensive coverage would cover damages due to events like theft or vandalism or phenomena like storms or earthquakes.

The expenses for these incidents can be staggering especially if you’re a young driver or a student, and having car insurance with sufficient coverage can be handy in the future. Be sure to contact your local car insurance agent there in Texas for more information about the benefits of a car insurance policy. You can also ask for certain discounts to make your policy rates more affordable. And you can also get free car insurance quotes online so be sure to check it out.

Buying Car Insurance For The First Time?

Reader’s Question:

My friend told me that if a person has never had car insurance before, he/she will be given high car insurance premium. Is that true?

Jim

Portland, ME

First time buyers of car insurance are usually charged with expensive car insurance compared to those who had had car insurance for years already. The reason behind this is because of the discounts that are usually given to long time policyholders. Auto insurance companies usually provide discounts for renewing your auto insurance policy with the same insurer.

There are various factors that affect your car insurance rate. This includes the years that you have been license and insured. For example, a young driver that is buying his/her first insurance for the first time will usually receive high car insurance rate compared to an experienced licensed driver who has been under auto insurance policy for more than a year.

Car insurance companies in most states are allowed to use different factors to know the policyholder’s premium rate. The cost of auto insurance for different motorists differ, as the level of risk for the insurance companies varies.

Keep a good driving record so you can get cheap auto insurance premium in the future. You may also be able to get lower insurance premium if you enroll in defensive driving class to get discount.

First Time Driver Florida Vehicle Insurance Rates

Reader’s Question:

Hey, I’m from Florida. I’ll be getting my vehicle insurance for the first time in this state. How is Florida vehicle insurance different from those in other states?

Paris

Orlando, FL

Where did you used to live, Paris? Vehicle insurance is regulated at the state level, and they all have different ways of handling driver responsibility.

In a tort state, for instance, it must be determined who is at fault. This driver will thus be responsible for whatever physical injury or damage caused by the accident. On top of medical expenses and repairs for the vehicle, the driver at fault must also cover additional losses of income and others.

Florida is a no-fault state, which means it is no longer determined who is at fault. Each driver’s own vehicle insurance coverage will pay for all the above losses. This system reduces the number of lawsuits filed because of car accidents.

Florida requires then for each resident driver to carry Personal Injury Protection (PIP), which will cover medical expenses and hospitalization of the driver and passengers. In Florida, PIP must be set at $10, 000 at the minimum. Additionally, property damage liability of $10,000 is required.

In most states, Liability Insurance Coverage, which pays for the bodily injury of the other driver is mandatory. Paris, states with tort system find this necessary to ensure that the victims’ losses are covered. For Florida vehicle insurance, however, this is not a requirement.

Reader’s Question:

This is my first time to buy car insurance. What do I have to do to get a rate quote and what information do you need from me?

Haley

Paradise, NV

We all have our many first. As first-timers you’d normally ask a lot of things. It is even normal for them to be clueless about things that can give huge advantage for them.

You may go through this stage especially when you’re a first-time insurance buyer.

Experience is the ideal teacher. Some insurance buyers learn best this way. However, even though it is your first time to purchase car insurance, you can always get past the mistakes in buying them. You can always make smart decisions and learn your advantages by taking note of these practical tips:

  • Do not jump into offers right away. You might overlook better deals if you settle on offers made by one or two insurance companies. Be smart. Check as many as you can.
  • Consider your state’s insurance limits. This will not only bring you to safety or give you permission to have your vehicles registered; it will also save you from getting a violation.
  • Understand what they are offering. Check the coverage. Make sure what is required by the state is included. Better yet, choose something that has more to cover.
  • Car insurance rates should never be too expensive. You can always find ways to lower the cost. Your driving records could save you from getting expensive premiums. If it is your first time to drive, you can at least lower your rate through your credit history.
  • You do not have to get comprehensive and collision coverage for old car.
  • Cheap is not always the optimal. However, you can always get cheaper deals with the best offers by simply increasing your deductibles. Just don’t be foolish to get the highest without considering your ability to secure emergency funds during accidents.
  • Raising your deductible amount is the single most important factor in determining your rate….that is in your immediate control.  Where you live, your age group and your driving record also play a huge role but those are not easily corrected. :(

Reader’s Question:

Hi! I recently got a car loan and was wondering if I need to insure the car right away or is there a grace period of some kind. If yes, what kind of coverage or policy I should get that will cost less. First time car owner here! Thanks!

Deborah

Tampa, FL

Yes you need to get car insurance! Car insurance laws vary from state to state, but all states have automobile insurance policy requirements that require some type of car insurance or proof of financial responsibility.

In most cases, your car loan lender may insist you to insure it with the collision and comprehensive coverage type. Comprehensive coverage reimburses you for lost value due to road accident, theft or any damage caused by fire, object, forces of nature or a simple vandalism done to your car. This might sound expensive but you can change your automobile insurance policy once you paid off your car loan.

If you manage to fully pay your car loan, here are some policy you might want to consider adding on a less expensive coverage. Having a bodily injury liability on your automobile insurance policy is important. Medical expense will be shouldered by the insurance company for you or any other person involved in the accident.

You also mentioned that you want an inexpensive insurance cost. Shopping around and comparing quotes online is the way to go. It’s easy, answer all the required personal information, choose comprehensive coverage (since this is what you need) and it will show a list of quotes from different company.

Raising your deductible which is the amount that will come out of your pocket before your insurance policy kicks in will save you on insurance premium also, but be sure you have a bank savings equivalent to your deductible. This is probably the best and fastest way to lower your insurance rates.

Reader’s Question:

I am a first-time driver, and I am about to buy my first car insurance policy here in Idaho. What can I do to get low premium rates?

Lloyd

Boise, ID

Congratulations! Now, just because you are an amateur driver doesn’t mean you can’t get low premium rates. You can still purchase your first-time car insurance policy at a low cost by considering certain factors.

First, you should choose a car that is well-built and equipped with plenty of safety features such as extra airbags or anti-lock brakes. You should also choose a car that is considered low risk, usually the slower or heavier types. You could also purchase a car insurance policy that has higher deductibles in order to pay less for premiums.

If you are still a teenage driver, compare costs if you were to get your own car insurance policy against being added to your parents’ car insurance policy. So, be sure to ask them first for advice.
You could also apply for discounts such as low mileage discount if you live near your workplace or your school. Maintaining a good average in school can also make you eligible for a discount. Most companies in Idaho offer these kinds of discounts, so you better make sure you keep your grades well above average. Allowing limitations on your license would also lower the premiums. These limitations can include not being allowed to drive at night or enrolling in a driving school.

Now, just remember to scout for a good car insurance agent in your city and get quotes from the different insurance providers in Idaho, so you can maximize your money. There are also free first-time drivers car insurance quotes on the internet, so be sure to check them out before finally deciding on buying your policy.
