Reader’s Question:

I am currently living in New York, but my family is soon moving to Anaheim, California because of a great job offer. So now, I need to know everything I need to know about the auto insurance policies there in California.

Logan

Anaheim, California

Logan, compared to the cost of living there in Brooklyn, New York, the move here to California is going to be quite a change. First of all, the car insurance regulations here in California are actually very simple that make the premiums, in effect, fairly inexpensive. But still, like in any other states, the rates of the different companies vary, so the best advice is to shop around and you will be surprised with how much you can actually save. In this state, being a resident makes you responsible financially for the damages and injuries you do in a vehicular accident because California is a tort state. In order for you to be able to drive a vehicle there in Anaheim, California, (I am from Burbank, California, by the way) you will have to show proof of your financial responsibility. The proof you would need could be a bond or cash deposit of $35,000 with the DMV. Another way of proving your financial responsibility is by buying a minimum amount of liability coverage. I think it would be wise for you to buy a nice insurance policy than risk your own assets, like most drivers do. The liability minimums here in California are $15,000 per person for the injuries caused to the other party and up to $30,000 for all with $5,000 for the damage to the property of the other party. You see, these are very low minimums and I think you would like to think of higher levels of coverage especially if you have major properties to protect. Also, the auto insurance companies here will also have some other optional coverage.
