Reader’s Question:

I recently got my drivers license suspended because of some traffic tickets here in Idaho that I forgot to pay, would it still be possible for me to get auto insurance coverage?

There is no reason why you shouldn’t be able to get coverage from auto insurance companies there in Idaho, as long as you got your drivers license reinstated, otherwise it would be very difficult to get anyone to insure you until you get your license back. It would be worth noting that there are providers out there who will agree to give you auto insurance coverage, even without a license yet, but most of those companies are rare and you would have to agree to very limited terms and conditions. So if you don’t have not gotten your license back yet, it would be very wise to start taking care of that first

Another thing that you should know about is how this would affect your auto insurance rate once you do apply for a new policy. Generally, a suspension of your license would mean a higher auto insurance rate with most providers, and your record will show this suspension for the next three years so it is very important to be careful in getting any further violations (even minor ones) as this can further escalate your insurance rates. You may choose to get defensive driving classes that should qualify you for discounts on your premiums. You could also consider driving an older or less expensive car and increase your deductible on your policy to save as much as you can on auto insurance costs.
