Reader’s Question:
My daughter will be moving here in Berkeley, California to live with me. She doesn’t have car insurance. I have auto insurance on all of my vehicles. Will she be allowed to drive and use my car?

It is mandated by California’s Compulsory Financial Responsibility Law that every owner and driver of a vehicle be financially responsible in an event that a vehicular accident happens. This law guarantees that all cars or vehicles driven in California have liability insurance policy which provides financial responsibility for injuries or damages that would result from accident, no matter whose fault it is. This also removes vehicles that are not insured from the streets or highways.
Since you’ve mentioned that you have insurance on all of your vehicles then there wouldn’t be a problem on letting your daughter drive your car. However, since she will be living with you under the same roof, then it’s probably best if you add her under your policy.
Ask your insurance agent in Berkeley, California to know if your daughter will be covered by your car insurance policy if she is involved in an accident. Check available websites if you’re shopping for auto insurance rates.
