Reader’s Question:

I just started working here in Seattle, Washington for a couple of months. I know that getting auto insurance here is mandatory. But I heard from my aunt that there are vehicles that are exempted from this rule. What vehicles are exempted from Washington car insurance law?

Under the Washington state law, anyone driving a motor vehicle must either have a certificate of deposit, insurance liability policy, or liability bond that meets the specified limits. As mandated by law, Washington follows a minimum liability policy of 25/50/10. However, there are certain types of vehicle that are exempted from the mandatory law for car insurance and these are as follows:

  • Antique: vehicles that are over 40 years old;
  • Collector’s: vehicles that are over 30 years old;
  • Government-owned: vehicles that are rented, leased or owned by the government;
  • Vehicles that are registered with Washington Utilities and Transportation Commission (WUTC)
  • Vehicles that are motor-driven (for example motor scooters);
  • Motorcycles; and
  • Mopeds

Always check with your insurance agent for more information about vehicle exemption in Seattle, WA. Also, you can find useful information by checking online resources.
