Reader’s Question:

I know somebody who’s been driving here with no vehicle insurances coverage at all. I am just curious, what are the punishments for driving without car insurance here in Michigan?

Kay

Sterling Heights, MI

I do hope you have vehicle insurances Kaye and you’re just asking out of curiosity. Because if not, you may find yourself in big trouble once you get caught driving without vehicle insurances.

The state of Michigan requires that all vehicles registered here be insured. If let’s say you let someone drive your car that is not insured, you can still be sued and be held liable if the person using your car is caught driving without car insurance.

The punishments I would say are quite harsh. Driving without vehicle insurances is considered a misdemeanor and may be fined $250 to $500 or you may also be required to do jail time for a period of one year or the punishment can be both.

In addition, your driving privileges may also be suspended for a period of 30 days or depending on how long you can provide proof of auto insurance policy. Moreover, if driving uninsured, you may also be held liable for any damages you’ve caused when you get involved in a vehicular accident.

I hope you’ll convince that person to get auto insurance before it’s too late. There are too many ways to get car insurance quotes and you can even do that online. Why don’t you try to get online auto insurance quotes for that person to give him or her idea on how much he/she will pay for his car insurance coverage? You should so something about it before you regret something big.

Reader’s Question:

I am new here in Illinois. I’m thinking of getting insurance for vehicles soon. What information can you share?

Tony

Rockford, IL

The most important thing to know Tony about insurance for vehicles in the state of Illinois is that before you can drive legally, you need to get car insurance.

Now in getting insurance for vehicles, you must consider on what Illinois requires. The state of Illinois requires the following:

  • Liability Coverage – This kind of auto insurance coverage does not directly cover you but covers the other party when you caused an accident. Under this are:
    * Bodily Injury (BI) – pays for the injury or death of the other party. Minimum required limits are $20,000 for every person for every accident and total of $40,000 for every accident.
    * Property Damage (PD) – As the name suggest, it pays for the damage that you caused on properties. Minimum required limit is $15,000 for every accident.
  • Uninsured Motorist Bodily Injury Coverage (UM) – If you get involved in a hit and run accident or with another driver who does not have auto insurance coverage, this will pay for your damages. The minimum required limits are $20,000 for every person and $40,000 for every accident.
  • Underinsured Motorist Bodily Injury Insurance (UIM) – This auto insurance coverage pays for the difference between the driver’s (who’s at-fault) auto insurance liability and you own UIM coverage.

It is strongly advised that you get more than the required auto insurance limits. It’s been proven by studies that in general, expenses relating to accident can go beyond $20,000 and the value of vehicles at present are more than $15,000.

Comprehensive Vehicle Insurance

Reader’s Question:

I’ve been reading a lot lately about car insurance and there are just too many coverages being offered. I’ve read somewhere about collision and comprehensive vehicle insurance. I don’t have the patient to do some more reading so I just need a simple explanation about this. What is this comprehensive car insurance coverage? Is this the same with collision coverage? Can someone help me with this?

Ronny

Coral Springs, FL

To make sure you do not confuse yourself with collision and comprehensive coverage, let me just tell you which is which.

Collision insurance coverage provides protection when your vehicle collided with another car or property. One thing you need to remember here is the word “collide”. Moreover, this kind of car insurance coverage protects you when your vehicle collided with: another car, a parked vehicle, or property or object such as but not limited to fence, pole, building etc.

Meanwhile, comprehensive vehicle insurance coverage protects you when your vehicle is damaged in non-related collision incidents like but again not limited to:

  • Theft
  • Hail
  • Flood
  • Windstorm
  • Vandalism
  • Earthquake
  • Flying or falling objects
  • Damage from contact with an animal or even a bird
  • Glass breakage
  • Riot or any incident of civil chaos
  • Explosion

For more information about comprehensive vehicle insurance, you may want to contact your auto insurance agent. Remember, these two car insurance coverages are optional. They are available with additional premiums. Before getting these two, I would recommend to know first the value of your car. If you think, your car value is low, then getting these two is not practical at all. The reason is simple, you may only be insuring a low value car and end up paying more for you premiums for collision and comprehensive vehicle insurance.

Reader’s Question:

I have a teen daughter. I’m thinking that once I’ve added her under my car insurance policy, my rates will increase. What tips can you give me to get the cheapest vehicle insurance possible?

Danielle

Toledo, OH

Adding your teen daughter will surely affect you car insurance rates to go up. In fact, I’ve read somewhere that adding a teen driver will even double your car insurance premiums.

However, I’ve also learned that there are still a lot of things that you and your daughter can do to get the cheapest vehicle insurance possible even if you have a teen daughter under your car insurance policy.

First, do not consider buying separate vehicle insurance for your teen daughter. By doing that you’ll end paying more.

Second, as a parent you should be responsible in setting limitations to your daughter when it comes to vehicle usage. Make sure she follows the rules.

Third, demand your daughter to pay a part of the vehicle insurance premiums. By doing that, your daughter will realize the responsibilities of owning or driving a car.

Fourth, ask if your car insurance company gives discount for drivers who enrolled in driver’s education program.

Fifth, it’s best to go for higher vehicle insurance limits more than what the state required. To help you lower your car insurance rates, it’s advisable to get higher amount for your deductible.

Lastly, it’s good to shop around for car insurance rates. If you do this you can get different car insurance rates and may even get the cheapest vehicle insurance that you’re looking for.

Reader’s Question:

I am from Florida. I just want to know, what are the insurance for vehicle requirements here? I just wanna make sure that I’m not breaking any laws so your help will be much appreciated. Thanks again!

Art

Jacksonville, FL

Hello Art! One of the important things to remember is that as long as you have car insurance on all of your vehicles that are registered and also licensed in Florida, then you don’t have to worry. You are not breaking any laws.

But just to make sure that you have met the insurance for vehicle requirements here in Florida, let me just do a quick review on car insurance.

The insurance vehicle requirement in the state of Florida is too simple. It only requires just two coverages: property damage liability and personal injury protection. The minimum required limits for those are just $10, 000 for every coverage. So, that’s $10,000 for property damage liability and another $10,000 for personal injury protection.

Bear in mind that car insurance companies cannot require you to purchase additional car insurance coverages aside from those two because it’s against the law. However, you have the right to purchase additional car insurance policies that you think will meet your needs.

If you are thinking of adding optional coverage insurance for vehicle, you may want to try looking for online car insurance quotes to give you an idea on how much the coverage will be. If you are decided to get more auto insurance policies, you can contact your car insurance agent.

Senior Auto Insurance

Reader’s Question:

I have a grandpa who still wants to drive whenever he can. I know he can still drive and we still consider him as a careful driver. However, we know that being a senior driver like him has some disadvantages and one is higher car insurance rates for himself. Can you give me some senior auto insurance tips so I can inform him of those?

Liz

Montpelier, VT

Surely Liz! I also have a grandpa who just can’t stop from driving. And he always tells us that he exactly knows what to do and even give me some senior auto insurance tips to make sure that his car insurance premiums will not be as high as what we expected.

First, make sure to avoid any vehicular accidents as much as possible. According to my grandpa, vehicular accidents for senior drivers like him usually took place in an intersection. So, he said that it’s important to give more than your 100% attention whenever you are in an intersection.

Second, just drive and follow the traffic flow. He said that driving slowly or if I may emphasize too slowly is just the same as driving in a speeding way. The danger is just the same so it’s not advisable to drive too slowly just to avoid accidents. The secret is to drive near the speeding limit.

Third, follow traffic rules and regulations all the time. It pays to know the new traffic rules just to avoid being involved in any traffic violations.

If you have additional question about senior auto insurance, you can always ask your auto insurance agent in your area. I wish your grandpa good health!

Vehicle Insurance Policy

Reader’s Question:

I am interested to know more about liability vehicle insurance policy. I read somewhere that it has three major parts. I just couldn’t find where I read that information. What are those major parts?

Anne

Boston, MA

That’s correct Anne. In general, liability vehicle insurance policy has three major parts – bodily insurance liability, property damage liability, and uninsured or underinsured motorist coverage.

In most states, liability insurance coverage is required. For you to be able to drive legally, you must purchase this kind of vehicle insurance policy.

Going back to your question, these are the three major parts of vehicle liability insurance policy:

  1. Bodily Insurance Liability Coverage. This backs you up if you get involved in a vehicular accident and you are the at-fault party. This offers coverage in the manner that it will pay for the damages that the other party incurred like medical bills, lost wages and even including suffering and pain. Your auto insurance policy will cover for the damages up to the specified limits you have in your policy.
  2. Property Damage Liability: This kind of policy pays for the damages you’ve cause to properties. Some of the damages include (but is not limited to) broken and damaged wall, fence, and glass.
  3. Uninsured/underinsured motorist Coverage: This offers direct protection to you if you were hit and run by another driver or the other party has no auto insurance policy or no enough coverage.

Remember the first two that I’ve mentioned does not cover you directly but pays for the damages for the other party involved, given that you are the at-fault party.
